The 7 face shapes explained
Most faces fall into one of seven categories. Each has distinct proportions — the relationship between your forehead width, cheekbone width, jawline width, and face length determines your shape.
How to measure your face shape
The most accurate method is to measure four key points with a flexible tape measure or ruler. Tie your hair back, stand in front of a mirror, and measure:
Measure across your forehead at its widest point, usually about halfway between your hairline and eyebrows.
Measure across the widest point of your cheeks, from the outer corner of one eye to the other.
Measure from the tip of one side of your jaw (below your ear) to the center of your chin — then double it.
Measure from the center of your hairline straight down to the tip of your chin.
Once you have those four numbers, compare them:
- All roughly equal, length slightly greater → Oval
- Width and length equal, soft jaw → Round
- All roughly equal, angular jaw → Square
- Forehead widest, narrow jaw → Heart
- Length much greater than width → Oblong
- Cheekbones widest, narrow forehead & jaw → Diamond
- Jaw widest, narrow forehead → Triangle
The quiz method
Measuring isn't the only way. You can also identify your face shape by answering a few questions about how your face looks — no tape measure needed. Our quiz walks you through forehead shape, jawline, cheekbones, and face length.
